Healthy Gym-Bag EssentialsIntro:When it comes to working out, everyone has a different opinion about the greatest gear. But no matter who you are, or how you work out, you definitely don’t want to leave home without these five gym-bag go-tos. Toothbrush and ToothpasteIf you’re working out hard enough to sweat, you’re working out hard enough for dry mouth. And what does dry mouth lead to? Bad breath, if you’re not careful. These days, a travel toothbrush and mini tube of toothpaste take up less space than your cell phone. Brushing your teeth will not only make your mouth feel better, it will make you want to rehydrate—and greet the post-workout world with a healthy smile. Clean SocksWhether you’re bare-footin’ it for yoga or gearing up for a serious spin session, it’s always a good idea to have a clean pair of socks. Sure you might have walked to the gym in your workout attire, but it’s still a nice change of pace for your feet to rinse them, dry them, and coddle them with dry socks after a pounding workout. Doing so will keep smelly feet at bay and help keep your socks looking nicer too—sweaty socks are more likely to pick up dye from your street shoes. CombYou’ve had a great workout, you’ve had a great shower, you’re ready to hit the streets to enjoy your endorphin high, and then you realize … your hair is a matted mess. Few gyms provide combs for their clients. And even if yours does, the comb’s tiny teeth are not much help if your hair has a mind of its own. So don’t rip out your hair (finger-combing and small combs can tear and shatter hair more than a wide-tooth comb)—bring a medium or wide-tooth comb to keep your hair healthy too. TamponsEven if your cycle is more predictable than your workout habits, it’s always a good idea to carry tampons with you. (Or don’t you remember the horror of discovering you had your period in gym class?) One great tip: Carry a few tampons in a sealed plastic bag. That will protect them from the other things in your bag, so they’re ready to go when you (or your workout buddy) need one. Face LotionMany dermatologists say you’re better off just splashing your face with water instead of washing it after a workout. But one thing you don’t want to skimp on is reapplying moisturizer (one with a sunscreen if it’s during the day). Even in a pinch, you probably don’t want to use the body lotion provided at your gym, especially if you’ve got sensitive or acne-prone skin. And especially when your face is already worked up from your workout.
